bianca strongly suggests that you buy pasteurized or otherwise sterilzed soil. All sorts of weird critters and molds are lurking in the dirt just waiting to nibble on your poor defenseless charges.
If you're too broke or too slackful to search out such carefully treated mud, you can pasteurize your own grime. From what bianca has heard, steaming your soil is the best way to go. Put the muck in a collander and place the collander over steaming water. Keep it there for about 20 or so minutes and the vile mites and fungi should return to the purgatory from which they spawned.
bianca does not suggest baking your soil however. She has heard from one source that baking soil changes the soil's chemistry and releases dubious and lingering gasses. She has heard from another source that it stinks up a room faster than an elephant corpse in a time machine. Pee-yoo.
Other than soil-bound stowaways, bianca has had very few problems in her garden. The proper watering system and soil balance can help obviate watering worries. Be careful not to overfertilize. And play your babies the music they love the best... Aphex Twin! Soon your children will be blossoming and burgeoning to your heart's content.
